AI to take centre stage at Melbourne Design Week

Researchers from MADA will discuss the role of AI in creative industries at Melbourne Design Week.

The upcoming Melbourne Design Week will feature Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) researchers discussing the role of AI in creative industries.

They will present 28 exhibitions, workshops and talks with industry partners across venues including the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), the Victorian Pride Centre and Monash University’s Caulfield campus.

Associate Professor Duncan Maxwell will lead ‘Future Building: Making Buildings Better’ and explain how AI is elevating construction by improving building quality and accelerating decarbonisation.

Designing Quantum Futures will be led by Associate Professor Leah Heiss, Professor Sarah Pink and Dr Debora Lanzeni. They will explore how quantum technologies could shape everyday life over the next ten years, from employment and healthcare to banking and transport.

Professor Jon McCormack and Dr Rowan Page will analyse the impact of generative AI on creative industries in their showcase, design, creativity and AI.

“Machines can now act more independently, creating images, designs, films and music, and that’s pushing us to rethink what creativity means and what a creative practice is. No one knows exactly where this is headed, but by the end of this panel, we hope you’ll have a clearer sense of what the future might hold.”

Senior Lecturer Katherine Sundermann’s workshop, Beyond Rezoning: Delivering Liveable Neighbourhoods, will look at whether we can build more homes near public transport, and simultaneously create healthier and more liveable communities.

As Melbourne’s population increases and urban growth boundaries expand, Associate Professor Robbie Napper’s panel discussion will ask important questions about what the future of Melbourne’s transport will look like.

“At MADA, our research is focused on the big issues shaping Australia’s future, from AI and housing to transport and liveability. Melbourne Design Week provides a powerful platform to showcase how architecture, design and creative research can inform policy, industry and everyday life. Australia’s leading design festival, Melbourne Design Week is curated by the NGV and supported by the Victorian Government.

Professor Mel Dodd further mentions the researchers are coupling their creative practice with emerging technologies to discuss urban and social challenges.
